The short answer

Seasonal hair shedding in fall is common. Many follicles enter their resting phase during summer and release those hairs 2 to 3 months later, so shedding often peaks from September to November. It usually settles within 6 to 8 weeks. If it lasts longer or your part is widening, book a scalp analysis.

Why hair sheds more in autumn

Hair grows in cycles. During long, bright summer days, a larger share of follicles moves into the resting (telogen) phase. About 90 days later those resting hairs let go, which lines up with September, October and November on Long Island.

Summer sun, chlorine, salt water and heat styling can also weaken strands, so the hair that sheds in fall may feel more brittle than usual.

Normal shedding vs. thinning

Normal seasonal shedding is spread evenly across the scalp and slows down on its own. Thinning is different: a part that looks wider, a ponytail that feels smaller, or more scalp showing at the crown under bright light.

The easiest way to know for sure is to look at your follicles. In a trichology consultation we magnify your scalp on screen and compare density at the part, crown and temples.

How to support your hair through fall

Be gentle with wet hair, switch to a wide-tooth comb and avoid tight ponytails while shedding is active. A professional scalp treatment clears buildup and calms the follicle environment so new growth comes in stronger.

For women who already notice thinning, adding low-level laser therapy in early fall helps keep more follicles in the growth phase through winter.

Frequently asked questions

How long does fall hair shedding last?

Seasonal shedding usually lasts 6 to 8 weeks. If heavy shedding continues past 3 months, book a scalp analysis to check for other causes.

Can I stop seasonal hair shedding?

You cannot stop the natural hair cycle, but scalp therapy, gentle styling and laser therapy can reduce how much hair you lose and speed up regrowth.
