The short answer

Genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common type in women. It usually shows as gradual thinning at the part and crown and can come from either parent. It can’t be cured, but early laser therapy and hair enhancement can slow it and restore fullness.

Is Genetic Hair Loss Preventable?

Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do to prevent hereditary hair loss, HOWEVER, there are options that may slow down the rate at which you lose hair. Some of these options are: low level laser light therapy, trichology scalp treatments, and some topical serums.

Men and Women Both Suffer From Genetic-Related Hair Loss

Hair loss is NOT limited to men. If other women in your family have hair loss it is possible that you may also develop Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL). In females you’ll notice thinning on top of your head. This is also known as androgenetic alopecia.

During menopause you will also be more likely to experience hair loss. This is due to the lack of estrogen.

Genetic Hair Loss in Men

Around the world approximately half of the men notice some amount of hair loss by the age of 50. This percentage increases to around 70% as they age.

Genetic Hair Loss in Women

Around 25% notice some hair loss by the age of 50, and as stated above, during and after menopause this can increase due to the lack of hormones.

It’s not as easy as looking at your parent’s or grandparent’s heads. You could possibly inherit genes from both sides that could determine your chances of genetic hair loss. There are also some cases people lose their hair and are the only ones in their family to do so.

Not Just Genetics

There are other reasons why people may lose their hair. This could be from a small bald patch or general thinning. Some medical treatments like chemotherapy can lead to hair loss. Illness, medications and stress can all cause some hair loss. A lack of certain vitamins or minerals could have an effect. A chance in your diet resulting in a rapid weight loss can cause hair loss until your body gets used to it the changes.

Genetic Hair Loss Is Gradual

It will progress over time, following the patterns typically seen in Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Baldness. As we know, everyone is different, some of you may notice it progressing faster than others.

Mom or Dad?

Contrary to the false belief that it comes from the maternal side, it can come from both sides. Scientists has discovered 63 genes that might be responsible for hair loss in men.
