WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
People spend a lot of money and time on their hair. We change our cut, our color, and want to look great but when was the last time you thought about your scalp? If your scalp is not healthy, either is your hair. Caring for your scalp can help prevent many of the common causes of hair loss and damage and can slow down the progression of hair loss.
Scalp care begins with your shampoo, conditioner, and any products you apply to your head.
When your scalp is healthy, your pores and follicles are open. Conversely, if your scalp is painful (a symptom of an unhealthy scalp) or very dry or very oily, your pores and follicles can be clogged. Those conditions make it difficult for hair to grow. It also creates a skin layer where bacteria grow which also causes odor.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN
HAIR PRODUCTS:
When thinking about trying a product make sure you research its claims and side effects (if any). As with everything you research, seek an independent source and not the website of the actual product.
Be wary of claims to “regrow” hair. Reputable companies will state that their product(s) will make hair healthier, shinier, and give the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. They will not state that they can regrow hair.
Read ingredients!
Look for products that are naturally based and state that they will clean your hair without harmful ingredients. Even some products with natural based ingredients can cause side effects.
For example, ashwagandha is one natural ingredient that shows up in some hair improvement products. It comes from a shrub and is part of the night shade family. There are some people who are allergic to and/or advised to avoid nightshades for a variety of medical reasons. Possible side effects of ashwagandha are: upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, and, in rare cases, liver problems. Ashwagandha is not recommend and could be unsafe for pregnant women because it might increase the risk of miscarriage. You sure don’t want to take that risk!
Ask your hair professional to look at your scalp. It’s possible they may suggest seeing a medical doctor. The condition of your scalp could be indicative of a health issue. When you start taking care of your scalp you will notice a difference in your hair’s shine and manageability. You will just love how it feels and looks!
